An Argument for a Hybrid HTN/Operator-Based Approach to Planning

چکیده
Work on generative planning syste[ns ha-~ focllsed On two dit, crsc aplJroac}lcs to plan construction. Ilierarchical task network (11’~N) planners build plans by successively refining high-level goals into lowerlevel activities. Operator-baqed planners employ means-end analysis to formulate plans consisting of Iow-level activities. While many have argued the universal dominance of a single approach, we present an alternative view: that in clifferent situations either may fJe most appropriate. To support t}lis view, vw describe a nurnbcr of advantages and clisadvantages of these approaches in light of our experiences in developing two real-world, fielcled planning systems.

On Learning Control Knowledge for a HTN-POP Hybrid Planner
In this paper we present a learning method that is able to automatically acquire control knowledge for a hybrid HTN-POP planner called Hybis. Hybis decomposes a problem in subproblems using either a default method or a user-defined decomposition method. Then, at each level of abstraction, generates a plan at that level using a POCL (Partial Order Causal Link) planning technique. Our learning ap...
متن کاملA tool-supported approach to engineering HTN planning models
Our research concerns formal, expressive, objectcentred languages and tools for use in engineering domains for planning applications. In this paper we extend our recent work on an object-centred language for encoding precondition planning domains to a language called OCLh, designed for HTN planning. Domain encodings for HTN planners are particularly troublesome, because they tend to be used in ...
متن کاملCaMeL: Learning Method Preconditions for HTN Planning
A great challenge in using any planning system to solve real-world problems is the difficulty of acquiring the domain knowledge that the system will need. We present a way to address part of this problem, in the context of Hierarchical Task Network (HTN) planning, by having the planning system learn the HTN methods incrementally under supervision of an expert. We present a general formal framew...
متن کاملHybrid Planning for Partially Hierarchical Domains
Hierarchical task network and action-based planning approaches have traditionally been studied separately. In many domains, human expertise in the form of hierarchical reduction schemas exists, but is incomplete. In such domains, hybrid approaches that use both HTN and action-based planning techniques are needed. In this paper, we extend our previous work on refinement planning to include hiera...
متن کاملA hybrid algorithm optimization approach for machine loading problem in flexible manufacturing system
The production planning problem of flexible manufacturing system (FMS) concerns with decisions that have to be made before an FMS begins to produce parts according to a given production plan during an upcoming planning horizon. The main aspect of production planning deals with machine loading problem in which selection of a subset of jobs to be manufactured and assignment of their operations to...
